Newton Medical Center offers aquatic physical therapy

Aquatic physical therapy is one of many services provided by Newton Medical Center. This type of therapy allows for patients to perform an exercise program entirely in the water.
Aquatic therapy is beneficial for many different medical conditions. Patients with arthritis, low back pain, weakness, balance problems, and post surgery or injury can all benefit from participating in aquatic therapy. Utilizing the physical properties of water helps with movement, decreases pain, and assists with recovery.

One of the most important benefits of aquatic therapy is the buoyancy principle of water. Just being in the water helps to support the body and decreases weight bearing on the joints. The overall decrease of stress on the joints improves range of motion, and allows for the exercises to be performed much easier and with reduced pain.

Another principle of water that is helpful during therapy is the resistance that water provides. Patients can move in every direction against water resistance and build muscular strength and increase endurance. Specific exercises can be progressed by varying the speed and range of motion in the water. Also, adding equipment like dumbbells, can further challenge and strengthen all patients.

Hydrostatic pressure occurs while immersed in water. As the water depth is increased, the higher the hydrostatic pressure. This pressure helps to decrease swelling and pain, and increase circulation. It also stimulates sensation, improves balance and coordination.

Moving and exercising in warm water, which is about 92 degrees, increases blood flow, decreases pain, and helps relax muscles that are contracted or in spasm. Patients are able to improve their function, gain confidence, and increase their health through aquatic physical therapy.
