Computerized Blood Glucose Testing
The process of testing blood glucose has, indeed, become simple. It's also become quick, painless and accurate.
|
Newton Medical Center's MediSense Precision PCx is a point-of-care blood glucose system that allows nurses to take accurate blood glucose readings several times a day without sending blood samples to the lab.
But what's different about this system is the sophisticated computer networking capability. After taking a reading, the nurse places the blood glucometer in a docking station, which sends information directly to a computer in the lab. The lab computer automatically orders and certifies the patient's results, then sends a report back to the nursing unit. Results can be on the patient's chart within five minutes of the test.
As each glucometer has a built-in memory, nurses can check previous results and quickly review the patient's blood sugar history.
The MediSense system, covered by insurance, is so accurate that medical staff can administer insulin immediately if necessary.
An additional benefit of the system is the well documented paper trail. Because each test is immediately sent to the computer, it becomes a part of the precisely recorded lab summary.?
